Lymphedema Therapy - $100 (MLD only)/ $150 (CDT)

Secondary lymphedema is a side effect of cancer or its treatment. Tumors can block lymph nodes or other structures causing lymph swelling, and treatment - such as surgical removal of lymph nodes can compromise lymphatic function. Lymphedema is most often associated with breast cancer treatment and arm swelling but it can happen with any cancer. Prostate cancer can cause lymphedema in the legs or genitalia, head and neck cancers can cause lymphedema in the face.

Lymphedema is like having a clogged drain. Fluid wants to flow through the lymph vessels, but it gets blocked in areas where lymph nodes have been removed or lymphatic vessels have been damaged. The lymph fluid begins to back up, which causes swelling. There may only be a few centimeters of swelling but this can cause significant pain, tightness, heaviness, and difficulty moving. Lymph fluid is protein rich and if it gets stuck it can cause skin changes, infection, and irreversible damage. Therefore, it is important to intervene when lymphedema presents. The earlier the treatment, the better chance for adequate reduction and prevention of adverse effects.

Lymphedema Therapy consists of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). There are two phases to lymphedema treatment: Phase I - Intensive reduction phase, and Phase II - maintainence. Treatment during Phase I is a serious time committment. Clients will need to have MLD and CDT daily (or as frequently as possible) for two to four weeks. Clients must also wear compression bandaging for 22 to 23 hours per day and engage in remedial exercises to promote lymph reabsorption and maximum reduction.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (MLD) aims to gently and rhythmically move the lymph through the body, especially swollen areas of the body, relieving pressure and enhancing the functioning of the immune system. As both a preventative and remedial technique, Lymphatic Drainage can be used for a wide range of purposes. Most commonly, MLD is used in the treatment of lymphedema that results from cancer related surgery or radiation. In addition to treatment of lymphedema, manual lymphatic drainage can aid in faster recovery from surgery or injury, reduction of swelling and discomfort from pregnancy, and strengthened resistance to illness.

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is a part of lymphedema management. In addition to manual lymphatic drainage, complete decongestive therapy aims to decrease the swelling and pain associated with lymphedema. The components of complete decongestive therapy consist of skin care, compression bandaging, and exercise. Melissa is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) who is able to work with your physician and perform all components of lymphedema care. She completed her training with the well respected Klose Training Group. Klose Training is associated with the world-renown Foeldi Clinic in Germany, innovators in lymphedema care. CDT sessions are combined with MLD. A session typically consist of measurements of the affected body part(s), manual lymph drainage and skin care, specialized compression bandaging, and review of exercises to promote lymph drainage and reduction of volume. Once reduction goals are met, clients will be fitted for specialized compression garments to maintain therapeutic results. A maintainence program will be developed and recommended for follow-up and to stablize results.

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) - $85

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle yet powerful technique that is effective in releasing neck pain, back pain, and mental stress (among other things). It does this by optimizing the movement of cerebrospinal fluid through the spine and around the skull. Developed by osteopathic physician John Upledger, DO based on the principles by A. T. Still and Sutherland, this therapy provides a very soothing and relaxing healing experience. Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system. By normalizing the environment around the brain and spinal cord and enhancing the body's ability to self-correct, CranioSacral Therapy is able to alleviate a wide variety of dysfunctions, from chronic pain and sports injuries to stroke and neurological impairment. CranioSacral therapy is most excellent for nervous system regulation in cases of truma, PTSD, grief and loss, emotional shock, as well as anxiety and depression. Melissa studied this modality with the Upledger Institute and is pursing certification.

Reflexology - $85

Reflexology is a type of bodywork based on ancient Egyptian and Chinese Medicine that focuses on applying pressure to the specific nerve zones in your hands or feet that correspond and affect other organs and structures in the body. In the United States, Dr. William Fizgerald and Dr. Shelby Riley mapped several reflexology zones on the body around 1917. The modern interpretation of reflexology was developed by Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist in the 1930s. Unlike other foot massages that intend to mostly relieve tension in the feet themselves, reflexology is a far more in-depth science that aims to harmonize your entire body. According to reflexology, every part of the human body is mapped into your hands or feet. Reflexology treatments have been found to be highly effective for conditions such as allergies, headaches, and depression. Additionally, most people find the treatment to be very relaxing. A warm soothing aromatherapeutic foot soak with river stones in a copper bowl is included.

Please note that I am not a Certified Reflexologist but proficient in basic techniques. If interested in this modality for more in-depth treatment I have a few excellent local Reflexologists to whom  I can refer.

Reiki - $85

Reiki is a Japanese form of energy work that cleanses and balances the energy system in the body. As a result, the body's natural self-healing mechanisms strengthen, helping to establish optimum health. During a session, I work directly with your energy field to remove blockages, detoxify your system, and restore your vital life force energy. Reiki utilizes a gentle laying on of hands to conduct energy. Sometimes this may be accomplished without touching the body. A session is typically conducted fully clothed while lying on a comfortable massage table, however, Reiki can be incorporated into any type of bodywork session. The benefits of Reiki range from the release of habitual mental or emotional stress to alleviating chronic pain. I trained and practice Kundalini Reiki at the Master/Teacher level.

Raindrop Technique - $85

Raindrop Technique is a powerfully relaxing method of aromatherapy application using therapeutic grade essential oils. The technique was developed by D. Gary Young (Young Living Essential Oils) in the 1980s based on Native American traditions. It combines several modalities to bring balance and transformation to the body supporting it on a physical and emotional level. Using light feathering touch the oils are gently dropped (simulating rain drops) and systematically applied to the neck, spine, and feet. The session is very relaxing and grounding. This technique is thought to help detox the body, boost the immune system, relax the muscles, and realign the energy centers of the body. Young Living essential oils are used - including Valor, Thyme, Basil, Marjoram, Wintergreen, Cypress, Oregano, Peppermint, Aroma Siez, and Ortho Ease. It is not uncommon to relax the spine so much that one achieves a lengthening in height!

Hot Stone - $95

Hot Stone Therapy is an adaptation of Swedish massage where heated Basalt stones are placed at specific sites on your body to deepen relaxation and promote circulation in your muscles. Muscles that are heated with these stones release tension and stress much more deeply and quickly than with a traditional massage. Using basalt stones which are fine-grained, high-density volcanic rocks with an exceptional ability to store heat in hot stone massage not only dispels tensions and soothes the soul but also enhances lymph flow, removes toxins, and fortifies the immune system. The overall experience is very relaxing, nurturing, and rejuvenating. Additional benefits are incurred from the energy of the stones. The treatment can be enhanced with gemstone chakra therapy which stimulates the meridians and chakras, gently dissipating energetic blockages and improving energy flow and wellbeing.

Breast Cancer Rehabilitation - $85

Breast cancer rehabilitation is a combination of services geared toward the recovery of women and men with breast cancer. Those who have had breast or lymph node biopsies, lumpectomies, lymph node removal, mastectomies, and/or breast reconstruction can benefit greatly from the interventions provided. Undergoing chemotherapy or radiation can cause additional issues. These services address muscular imbalances, postural distortions, and nerve pain, adhesive capsulitis, scapular dysfunction, axillary web syndrome, iron bra syndrome, radiation fibrosis syndrome, scars, seromas, swelling, edema, and lymphedema, among others. Techniques utilized may include myofascial release, scar work, manual lymph drainage, compression, gentle passive and active stretching, range of motion exercises, and post-mastectomy exercises. This can be especially important for those undergoing reconstructive surgery. Tissue expanders can cause extensive pain which may limit movement leading to more dysfunction.  It is imperative to intervene early for best outcomes. For post mastectomy clients, I work closely with a local mastectomy bra fitter with extensive knowledge and sensitivity to the emotional needs of breast cancer clients. A properly fitting mastectomy bra assists with function, balance, and movement in addition to esthetics.

Breast Massage - Included in Integrated and Breast Cancer Rehabilitation Therapy Sessions

Breast massage uses varying amounts of mild to moderate pressure in gentle lifting and compressive movements.  Breast massage stimulates drainage of the breasts' lymphatic system, which eliminates harmful waste products and allows nutrient-rich blood to travel to the breast tissue. Increasing circulation helps to keep breast tissue healthy. Breast massage can help relieve pain, congestion, inflammation, lumps, scarring, fibrocystic breasts, PMS breast symptoms, and promote lymph fluid removal. It can also be an integral component of recovering from a lumpectomy or biopsy. An important part of breast massage is the teaching of self-massage and breast examination for self-care. Holistically, breast massage connects the body and releases oxytocin in a nurturing and natural way. Nurse Massage Therapist Cheryl Chapman pioneered these breast massage techniques and provides education on the value of "pluffing the girls".  Debra Curties is also an expert in breast massage and has many helpful hints I would encourage you to check out for better understanding. Breast massage is not sexual in nature and clients will be properly draped and positioned to promote modesty and comfort. Clients will need to sign an additional consent form for this modality.

Post Surgical Scar Management - $85

Surgical scars can become a significant source of pain and disability if not healed properly. Surgical scar management aims to prevent adhesions, hypertrophic and keloid formations, pain, and irritation. Scars can become overly sensitive and can limit motion and function. Scar formation and scar maturation are ongoing processes. Scars continue to grow and change throughout the recovery process which may take from twelve to eighteen months or longer. Scar massage is an effective way to decrease scar tissue build up and help make scars less noticeable. Massage can begin after the wound closes and any staples or sutures are removed. Silicone dressings can promote collagen remodeling by applying pressure to scars.
